Grand Théâtre de l'Exposition – 151-Piece Hand-Cut Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle
Grand Théâtre de l'Exposition
Artwork by Jules Chéret, 1889Step back into the colorful world of a vintage French theater with this one-of-a-kind hand-cut wooden jigsaw puzzle.
The artwork reproduces a wonderfully theatrical French advertising poster for the Grand Théâtre de l'Exposition, filled with performers, musicians, clowns and bold period typography. Rich reds, yellows and blacks contrast with the aged appearance of the original artwork, creating a puzzle with an unmistakable turn-of-the-century character.
But the artwork is only half the story.
This puzzle features a free-form cutting style designed to move away from the familiar rows, columns, knobs and sockets of a conventional jigsaw puzzle. The pieces twist and flow into one another in irregular, organic shapes, with no predictable pattern to guide the solver. Some pieces are long and slender, others branch in several directions, while still others seem to curl around their neighbors.
The result is a puzzle that looks quite different when turned over—and provides a solving experience to match.
At approximately 12" x 4.5" with 151 individually hand-cut pieces, its unusual long, narrow format complements the proportions of the original poster. Don't be fooled by the relatively modest piece count. The free-form cut makes orientation and piece recognition an important part of the challenge.
Each piece was individually cut by hand on a scroll saw. No two pieces are identical, and there are no computer-generated or laser-cut piece patterns. The puzzle is signed and dated on the reverse.
